0:00 Hey everybody, welcome to another episode of Uncle Dad's Mixed and Mingle, episode 3. This one's a very special one because I'd like to consider this, and you correct me if I'm wrong, it's almost a referral from another alumni, and I love that. We haven't done that yet, so this is exciting. If you heard our episode, the first episode that kicked us off with laser tears, we have a friend, Paris, is that correct? We are hanging out with the one and only DJ TuneIn. How are you? I'm doing very well. Happy day. Yeah, don't tell them the day. Tuna, you know, I'm very curious. Like, I think the best way I always started this show is like the journey, right? How you got there.

0:41 So I'm curious. At what moment did you tell yourself, you know what? I want to DJ. So that's a great question. It's kind of, I'll summarize it to my best. But my name, you asked me earlier about it. It kind of goes with my journey. But I kind of started off doing yoga. And so starting from that like it was really a lot of self-reflection and kind of like tuning into like who I am and trying to like my authentic self that's actually like my word for the year so I remember this one specific moment that kind of was like a game changer for me because I was into like DJing and mixes a little bit before this but I went to a concert at Music in the park and it was the Wailers I remember Bob Marley's band that was playing I just the vibe was amazing and I just remembered I'm like you know I'm really gonna tune into this present moment into this music that's going on and just had the absolute best experience the music was amazing and I just remember thinking you know what I want to do that I want to play music and I want like everyone to feel like what i'm feeling obviously it's not going to be the same but you know to some kind of extent and so i just had that in the back of my mind and eventually the opportunity i don't even know how it really came about but i just remember learning about ladies first a dj club hosted by soulmates which are a duo here in san jose they're amazing and also

2:12 pets i love them so much he's a great amazing dj all of them so yeah they hosted it out of mom's Sarah Platt Shop. I'm from San Jose, so here in San Jose. And a bunch of the other amazing women that I've been fortunate enough to DJ with. And, you know, they've been in that community and it's been like a core... Support in my journey and they continue to do so and you know i've met so many other amazing people and dj artists from there and just kind of like yeah that's how i got my start i love that and i want to touch on what you said uh being tuning in and being present so a big part of what we do on the normal show for uncle dad talks is that we focus a lot on that about being present and when you realize that you're present you realize how different everything changes right like it becomes a much more i guess a lack of a better term i tuned in experience right so we're big burning we're big burners in the show like we talk a lot about burning man and whatnot and that's a big thing about burning man right you learn to be present and have you been before i just have to ask you oh but i did see like when i was looking at your like website that you guys had an entry and i want to check that out so but yeah if you are what you're talking about specifically and you want that mindfulness and you want that intuitiveness and then being just mindful to yourself.

3:32 Burning Man, you need to experience one day. One day you have to do it. It's a journey, and it's not an easy journey, but it definitely is something that I think everybody needs to experience. So anyways, enough about that. We talked about that enough on my normal show. But I think it's so beautiful what you said, and I like that how, and for those who don't know, we're on from around here. Music in the Park is a summer series where people listen to music, and there's sometimes some really big acts there. Obviously, the wheelers are legendary, right? And funny enough, I was actually at that show, so it's kind of funny. But i absolutely think i think it's fascinating about what your story is too you mentioned about like the community and support do you feel like doing djing has helped you find either your primary tribe or a tribe that means a lot to you either one completely like something that i I didn't expect coming out of this was just how community-oriented this is.

4:29 I did not expect that at all, and it has been the most wonderful surprise. Like I have some, I think I, I, I mean, I know I could call these women sisters and like our DJ mentors, we call them like the, like we joke around and call my DJ dad and mom, but like, I totally feel it. Cause like, they're always so supportive and genuine. Some of the most genuine people. I mean, it's like, it's really beautiful. It's like, shout out to them. Shout out to my ladies, first sisters and mentors. Yeah i love that now when you were kind of getting in that world of djing do you normally, stick with the idea of house music edm just basic dance music do you kind of what do you what would you consider as your style you know what like that's another great question because i feel like i'm figuring that out i used to when people would ask me like oh like what's your favorite music i used to hate when people said oh i love all music but that's actually become true for me like I love it all like I can't categorize and I can't limit myself and I think maybe you'll hear a little bit of that in my mix but but yeah like I grew up heavily like maybe with like rock alternative R&B a lot of Spanish music my parents are like a little older so they like like all the old old school traditional like Spanish music so that too but like as I'm kind of on growing up and making my own choices of what I want to listen to and stuff like that.

5:57 My whole world has expanded and I know I just want to continue to do so. I'm really excited to see where my style develops. I actually also want to really learn and am learning to get like into scratching and everything. So I've like learned or became friends with some amazing people. DJ Punky P. He's like a great friend. And all the people from Xteria's to Fresh to Kendo and J.E. Wow. So yeah, I'm learning that as well. And that's something that I really want to develop because I'm something, I'm someone who I like to learn like the foundation of all things. So I know that scratching is a big part of it, of the hip-hop culture and stuff. And I want to just learn more about that. I want to incorporate that as well.

6:41 So that's something that's actually a little bit challenging for me, but no rest. Yeah. And I don't know if I caught this, and you mentioned this. I'm sorry, I missed it. Did you mention how long you were DJing for? No, so actually I just started. We finished, and we did our group session class in January. So probably like what like nine months in like fresh out the womb nice nine months girl such man i love that so how many where do you i mean if you can where have you played so far uh what has been your favorite experience playing so far um yeah so i've played uh so far at 55 south uh radius the club on top of aura inside downtown san lisa i'm sorry uh you broke up there what was there a club oh uh aura aura in downtown san francisco there's like oh yeah yeah yeah like also shout out to my coach uh djr love he's been putting me on and it had been um santa and roy did recently wow also i played in some music city in san francisco sorry ryoko's to restaurant japanese restaurant over there wow.

7:50 Oh, we're also community events. I love doing community events. That's amazing. So are you trying to make this like your career, your secondary career? What do you think is the path that you want to take this up? Well, originally when I started doing this, my intention was just to learn how to DJ. Like I didn't really like have any like, I want to do this or do that with it. I think that's still my intention is mostly to like empower people. So my personal intention is to live a life so authentic that it empowers and inspires people to do the same and to really inspire community. That's the position in life. So whatever that may be, I mean, I have multiple interests.

8:34 DJing is definitely one of them. I'm new to this, as I mentioned. So I'm really open to whatever it is, but I love learning it. And I love the music. But yeah, I love the people a lot, too. You know nothing nothing really speaks about like a hobby or like i guess you call it a hobby like something like that where until you meet the community right the community changes everything right like you can be super into cars but then you go to a car show and everybody's pretentious right then it ruins that experience right even dj i mean we can't be we can't kid ourselves they're definitely pretentious djs out there you know but if you get that right community and you get that right selection of people it just makes everything just feels like that like magic right and i love that you can say that so what i you know we we have to uh go to break here and so i can go to your mix but before we go into your mix how would you describe your mix and what would you what do you hope our audience gets from it yeah so i i wanted to make this mix like really fun and lively and just kind of like energy booster so i don't know there's a little bit of everything that i like so yeah i hope you like it yes i think we will now we'll be right back after we listen to this amazing mix by DJ Toonin.

Um i mean like i'm working on not being so much of a perfectionist so definitely like i can be like very like um you know a stickler for that but this is like try to let loose a little more and kind of just have fun with it so yeah i really try my best on it and yeah yeah it was fun and i think our audience is gonna like it too you know our last guest he was actually a house music veteran his name is uh drew deep and he's been doing it for a long time and it's kind of a great contrast of how you have you know like laser tears you've been doing it just kind of like you have and then you know you have somebody's been doing it for 30 years and then you have you know yourself again i love that because it all it doesn't matter like you're you're how long you've been doing it the passion's all the same and i think that is the most beautiful part about seeing you guys do all this so just thank you for taking the time and making a mix for us and kind of get bringing the vibes and having a good time now what i want to play with you a game so.

39:21 That'd be awesome I think you know what I feel like there's certain holidays that are just designed, for DJs yeah and one of those Halloween to me is just one of those big ones you know what I mean like that's such a great one to get people hyped to have a good time, and you know we're based in the South Bay here and there's so many great venues and stuff to go hang out at hang out at and I'm curious before we wrap up what would be your three places you would recommend for a person who wants to dance in San Jose? Oh, my favorite bar is Five Points for sure. I love it. I've actually never been there. Is that a dancing bar though? You can dance there? You can dance there. It's pretty small. A whiskey bar.

40:04 Actually, I've heard some of the amazing BJs there, so I just love that one. Are you doing it? So that's one? Yeah, that's one. And then another place to go to dance... Maybe I would say like SP2. I love that part too. Okay, okay. That's like my old home. Okay, SP2. Nice. Okay. And can you give us one more? Yeah, one more. Let's see. Oh if you like like latin music i would probably recommend like hacienda that one's always like super fun where's hacienda it's in downtown san jose right in front of the church oh that's that one okay it's a little crazy but i always have one there you know i i see it all the time because i literally live in downtown san jose as well and you know i want to start promoting downtown more because there's so many great places that people can you know visit when they come into our town and i i didn't realize it was like like that kind of club i thought it was like an edm club it's a it's a latin club it's like latin club i'm not sure they have like different music for different nights but yeah when i've gone there it's always been latin music um yeah awesome i have fun you know just be safe i love that of course always be safe uh one of my favorite places and.
